Course Overview

This course explores a model of implementing strategic alliances, business partnering and joint ventures that was adopted as the best practice by the American Management Association and Accenture Consulting. The principles, which are offered in the form of an architecture of alliances, were independently and concurrently developed by Professor Stephen Gomes and his staff while he was CEO at AmTech, Inc. and by Robert Lynch, founding partner of The Warren Company.

The primary text for the course is Robert Lynch's book Business Alliances Guide (John Wiley and Sons, 1993, ISBN 0-471-57030-3 (approximate cost $50.00 new and $20.00 used from Amazon. The book is a compilation of best practices in strategic alliance formation and implementation distilled from an analysis of what worked in approximately 40 different high performance international and domestic strategic alliances. It offers a well articulated general framework for each phase of alliance formation that is applicable across a broad range of alliance types.

The objective of this course is to provide each student with an opportunity to learn practical, market-proven methods for forming, implementing and executing high-performance strategic alliances.

Class discussion will include a review of strategic alliance and joint venture principles in the post-Enron era. It will also include specific focus on alliances from an international point of view. It will help students understand what makes a strategic alliance 'strategic' and what the differences are between 'tactical' and 'strategic' alliances.
